Violence and Graphic Content Policy
This policy explains how Xiam handles violent, graphic, and disturbing content across Debates, Discover videos, Stories, comments, and profiles.
1. Prohibited Content
Xiam prohibits:
- Gore, mutilation, or dismemberment shared to shock, glorify, or entertain
- Footage of real death or severe injury, except in a clearly newsworthy or documentary context with appropriate context and warning labels (see Section 3)
- Torture — depictions of real torture of humans or animals
- Animal cruelty or abuse — content depicting intentional harm to animals, including fighting, abuse, or staged cruelty for entertainment
- Glorification or celebration of violence — content that praises, celebrates, or expresses approval of real-world violence, mass casualty events, or perpetrators of violence, including praise of terrorist attacks, mass shootings, manifestos promoting violence, or celebration of perpetrators of mass violence
- Credible threats of violence — direct or implied threats against a specific person, group, or place. Credible threats include statements, images, symbols, or other communications that reasonably suggest an intention to commit violence against a specific person, group, institution, or location.
- Instructional violent content — content providing instructions, encouragement, or facilitation of real-world violence, mass harm, or violent criminal activity
- Self-harm and suicide content — content promoting, encouraging, or instructing suicide or serious self-harm may be removed under this policy or our future Self-Harm Policy
2. Debate Context
Xiam is a debate platform, and topics like war, crime, capital punishment, and historical atrocities will naturally come up in argument and discussion. Discussing, analyzing, or arguing about violent topics — including taking a position someone else may find disturbing — is not itself a violation. What's prohibited is graphic visual depiction, glorification, or threats, not the discussion of difficult topics.
3. Newsworthy and Documentary Exceptions
Graphic content may be permitted in limited circumstances where it serves a genuine public-interest or documentary purpose, such as:
- Coverage of a significant news event
- Historical or educational documentary content
Where permitted, such content should include appropriate context and warning, and we may still restrict it from broad recommendation/Discover distribution even if it is not removed entirely. We do not allow graphic content to be presented as entertainment or shock content under the guise of "news."
We may remove content that exploits victims of violence, displays graphic injuries without legitimate public-interest value, or appears intended primarily to shock, harass, or traumatize viewers. Even where violent content is permitted for news, documentary, or educational purposes, we may exclude it from recommendations, trending surfaces, and Discover distribution. Xiam may also place warning screens or interstitial notices in front of sensitive content that is permitted for public-interest reasons but may be disturbing to viewers.
4. Enforcement
- Uploaded photos and videos are scanned by automated content-safety systems for graphic violence indicators
- Flagged content may be sent for human review, restricted in distribution, or removed
- Credible threats of violence may result in immediate account suspension and, where appropriate, referral to law enforcement, consistent with our Law Enforcement Request Policy
- Repeated or severe violations result in permanent account ban
- Xiam may temporarily remove, restrict, or limit the distribution of violent content while a review is ongoing where there is a credible risk of harm or public safety concern
- Users may not evade violence-related enforcement actions by creating new accounts or using third parties to access the Service after suspension or ban
5. Reporting
You can report any post, comment, Story, or profile for graphic violence using the in-app reporting tool.
6. Appeals
If your content was removed and you believe this policy was applied incorrectly — for example, content removed that was legitimate news or documentary coverage — you can appeal through the process described in our Enforcement and Appeals Policy.
7. Changes
We may update this policy as Xiam's features and community standards evolve. Material changes will be noted in-app.
