Deepfake and Synthetic Media Policy
This policy explains how Xiam handles AI-generated and digitally manipulated media ("synthetic media"), including so-called "deepfakes."
1. What Is Synthetic Media
Synthetic media is any image, video, or audio that has been generated or substantially altered using artificial intelligence or other digital tools to depict a person doing, saying, or appearing as something that did not actually occur, or to fabricate a realistic depiction of a person or event that does not exist. This policy applies to AI-generated or manipulated audio, including cloned voices and synthetic speech designed to imitate a real person.
Materially edited or deceptively cropped media that creates a false impression of a real person's actions or statements may also be treated as synthetic media under this policy, even where no AI generation was involved.
2. Permitted Synthetic Media
Synthetic or manipulated media used for satire, parody, artistic expression, commentary, or clearly disclosed fictional purposes is generally permitted and does not violate this policy, provided it is not deceptively presented as authentic, unaltered footage of a real event.
Public figures may be depicted in clearly satirical, artistic, or commentary-based synthetic media, provided such content is not deceptively presented as authentic and is not reasonably likely to cause real-world harm.
Users are encouraged to disclose when media has been significantly generated or altered by AI, particularly where the content depicts real people or realistic events.
3. Prohibited Synthetic Media
Xiam prohibits synthetic media that:
- Depicts a real, identifiable person in sexual or intimate content without their consent — strictly prohibited in all cases; see our Sexual Content and Nudity Policy
- Is deceptively presented as authentic real footage of a real event or statement, where this is reasonably likely to deceive viewers and cause real-world harm (for example, fabricated footage of a public figure making statements they never made, presented as genuine)
- Sexualizes a minor in any way, including AI-generated content — strictly prohibited with zero tolerance; see our Child Safety Standards Policy
- Is used to impersonate a real person to commit fraud, harassment, or deception — see our Verification and Impersonation Policy
- Is used to spread election or public-safety disinformation likely to cause real-world harm — see our Misinformation Policy
- Is used to facilitate fraud, impersonate businesses, solicit money, promote investment scams, or deceive users into providing personal information
4. Context and Labeling
Where synthetic media is permitted but could reasonably be mistaken for authentic footage, we may require or apply a label identifying it as AI-generated or manipulated, restrict its distribution (e.g., exclude it from Discover), or take no action if the synthetic nature is sufficiently obvious from context (for example, clearly stylized or fantastical content). Xiam may require creators to label synthetic media, may apply labels automatically, and may remove labels only where the synthetic nature of the content is sufficiently obvious.
During elections, emergencies, or major public-safety events, Xiam may apply heightened review, labeling, or distribution restrictions to synthetic media that could materially mislead the public.
5. Debate Context
Using synthetic media to illustrate a hypothetical, argue a point of comparison, or create clearly-labeled satirical content within a debate is not itself a violation. The dividing line is deception: presenting fabricated content as real, with intent to deceive or with reckless disregard for the harm that deception could cause. Synthetic media used solely to illustrate hypothetical scenarios, alternate histories, simulations, or debate arguments is generally permitted where the fictional nature of the content is reasonably apparent or clearly disclosed.
6. Enforcement
- Confirmed violations are removed
- Sexual synthetic content involving real people without consent, or sexualized synthetic content involving minors, results in immediate removal and account ban consistent with our Sexual Content and Nudity Policy and Child Safety Standards Policy
- Repeated or severe violations result in permanent account ban
- Accounts repeatedly posting deceptively labeled or unlabeled synthetic media may lose recommendation eligibility, verification status, or access to certain platform features in addition to suspension or ban
7. Reporting
If you believe you are depicted in synthetic media on Xiam without your consent, or that synthetic media is being used to deceive viewers, please report it using the in-app reporting tool. If you are the person depicted, please identify yourself when reporting so we can prioritize review.
8. Appeals
If your content was removed and you believe it was legitimate satire, parody, or clearly-labeled fictional content, you can appeal through the process described in our Enforcement and Appeals Policy.
9. Changes
This is a fast-evolving area of technology and policy. Because synthetic-media technologies evolve rapidly, Xiam may implement additional detection tools, labels, review procedures, and restrictions without prior notice where reasonably necessary to address emerging risks. We expect to update this policy more frequently than others as synthetic media tools and risks evolve. Material changes will be noted in-app.
