Harassment and Hate Speech Policy
Xiam is built around disagreement and debate — that's the point of the platform. This policy explains where vigorous debate ends and harassment or hate speech begins.
1. Our Principle: Ideas vs. People
Disagreement, criticism, unpopular opinions, and vigorous debate do not by themselves violate this policy, even when expressed forcefully. We distinguish between attacking an idea or argument and attacking a person. Content is more likely to violate this policy when it includes targeted harassment, threats, dehumanization, or coordinated abuse directed at a specific individual or group — not simply because it expresses a view someone else dislikes.
Harassment is behavior intended to intimidate, threaten, silence, humiliate, or repeatedly target another person beyond the normal boundaries of good-faith debate.
2. Prohibited: Harassment
You may not:
- Threaten another user with violence or harm
- Repeatedly target a specific user with unwanted, hostile contact across debates, comments, or messages
- Encourage or organize others to harass a specific person ("pile-on" or brigading behavior)
- Share someone's private information without their consent to facilitate harassment or intimidation ("doxxing")
- Use sexual harassment, including unwanted sexual comments or advances
- Create content designed to demean, degrade, or humiliate a specific individual outside the context of fair debate
- Encourage another person to commit suicide or self-harm — this may be treated as severe harassment
- Create fake accounts to harass, intimidate, or evade blocks
- Use Xiam to direct harassment toward individuals on other platforms, or encourage off-platform abuse
3. Prohibited: Hate Speech
You may not post content that attacks, demeans, or incites hatred against people based on:
- Race or ethnicity
- National origin
- Religion or religious belief
- Disability
- Gender or gender identity
- Sexual orientation
- Serious disease or health condition
- Caste
This includes slurs, dehumanizing comparisons (e.g., comparing a group to animals or disease), claims of inferiority based on a protected characteristic, and calls for exclusion or harm against a group based on these characteristics.
Debating Policy, Not People
You may debate political, religious, social, and policy topics related to these characteristics — including positions others may strongly disagree with. The line is between debating an idea, policy, or position, and attacking people for who they are.
4. Context Matters
We consider context when reviewing reported content, including:
- Whether content is condemning, reporting on, or quoting hate speech (e.g., discussing a historical atrocity) versus expressing it directly
- Satire and parody, where clearly identifiable as such
- Whether the account has a pattern of targeting the same individual repeatedly
Filing false, malicious, or coordinated reports against users solely because of disagreement with their opinions may itself violate our Spam and Platform Manipulation Policy.
5. Enforcement
- First-time, lower-severity violations typically result in content removal and a warning
- Repeated violations, credible threats, or coordinated harassment result in temporary or permanent suspension
- Severe hate speech, credible threats of violence, stalking, or targeted campaigns of abuse may result in immediate permanent ban and, where appropriate, referral to relevant authorities
- Xiam may reduce the visibility of borderline content, remove it from Discover recommendations, or limit engagement features while a review is ongoing
- Xiam may temporarily restrict accounts, disable messaging, or limit interactions where there is a credible risk of harassment, stalking, or threats of violence
6. Reporting
You can report any post, comment, Story, profile, or message for harassment or hate speech using the in-app reporting tool. If you are being targeted by coordinated harassment, please report each instance so we can identify the pattern.
7. Appeals
If your content or account was actioned and you believe this was a legitimate debate position rather than harassment or hate speech, you can appeal through the process described in our Enforcement and Appeals Policy.
8. Changes
We may update this policy as Xiam's features and community standards evolve. Material changes will be noted in-app.
