Misinformation Policy
Xiam is a debate platform. Disagreement, strong opinions, predictions, and unpopular positions are the point of the Service — they are not misinformation, even when other users or we disagree with them. This policy explains the narrow category of content we do treat as harmful misinformation, and what we deliberately do not restrict.
Xiam does not moderate content based on political viewpoint, ideology, religious belief, or lawful opinion. Enforcement under this policy is based on deception and risk of real-world harm, not viewpoint. This policy is intended to prevent deception that creates real-world harm while preserving the widest possible space for disagreement, criticism, argument, and exploration of controversial ideas.
1. What Is Not Misinformation
The following are not violations of this policy, even if factually disputed or unpopular:
- Opinions, predictions, and interpretations of facts
- Debate positions taken for the purpose of argument
- Satire and parody, clearly identifiable as such
- Good-faith disagreement about contested, evolving, or genuinely uncertain topics
We do not fact-check or label debate content as "true" or "false" based on subject matter alone, and we do not penalize users for taking a side in a debate.
2. What Is Prohibited
Xiam prohibits content that:
- Is deliberately fabricated and presented as fact with intent to deceive, and
- Is reasonably likely to cause real-world harm — for example, false claims that could endanger public health or safety, incite violence, or undermine the basic integrity of an electoral process through fabricated claims (e.g., false information about voting dates, locations, or eligibility)
This also includes manipulated or synthetic media (including deepfakes) presented as authentic, real footage when it is not, where doing so is reasonably likely to deceive viewers about a real event or real person's actions. Synthetic or manipulated media used for satire, parody, artistic expression, or clearly disclosed fictional purposes generally does not violate this policy. The violation occurs when such media is deceptively presented as authentic and is reasonably likely to cause real-world harm. See our Deepfake and Synthetic Media Policy for additional detail on synthetic media specifically.
Users may not falsely claim to be government officials, election authorities, medical professionals, emergency responders, or other trusted institutions in order to spread deceptive information.
During public emergencies, Xiam may remove fabricated information that is reasonably likely to cause imminent physical harm, interfere with emergency response efforts, or create significant public safety risks.
3. How We Evaluate Content
We consider:
- Whether the claim is presented as objective fact versus opinion or argument
- Whether there is a reasonable basis for the claim, even if ultimately disputed
- The potential for real-world harm if the claim is believed and acted upon
- Whether the content is clearly satire, parody, or hypothetical
We apply this policy narrowly and are deliberately cautious about over-enforcing on a debate platform, where the entire premise is that users will disagree about facts and their interpretation.
4. Enforcement
- Confirmed violations may be removed, labeled, or have their distribution restricted (e.g., excluded from Discover/recommendations) depending on severity
- Repeated or severe violations (e.g., coordinated disinformation campaigns) may result in account suspension or ban
- We do not ban accounts simply for holding or arguing unpopular, controversial, or minority positions
- Users who correct, retract, or clarify previously posted information in good faith may receive reduced enforcement consideration
Coordinated disinformation campaigns include organized efforts by multiple accounts, automated systems, or deceptive networks to deliberately spread fabricated information likely to cause real-world harm.
5. Reporting
You can report content you believe constitutes harmful misinformation under this policy using the in-app reporting tool.
6. Appeals
If your content was actioned and you believe it was a legitimate opinion, prediction, or debate position rather than misinformation, you can appeal through the process described in our Enforcement and Appeals Policy.
7. Changes
We may update this policy as Xiam's features and community standards evolve. Material changes will be noted in-app.
